Helmut Newton was born in 1920. In
1936 he became an apprentice under the Berlin photographer Elsie
Simon. After two years Newton moved to Singapore and accepted
a position as a photojournalist for the Singapore Straits Times.
He was fired two weeks later due to incompetence. Newton then
moved to Australia in 1940 and served five years in the Australian
army. After he was discharged from the army he opened a photography
studio in Melbourne.
Newton began contributing fashion photos to French Vogue in 1961
and continued to do so for twenty-five years. During this time,
he also was a regular fashion contributor to Linea Italiana, Queen,
Nova, Jardin des Modes, Marie-Claire, Elle, and American, Italian
and German Vogue. Helmut Newton is best known for his fashion
and nude photography. Helmut Newton died January 24th, 2004.
